Every moment is a teaching moment at Bridges Middle School, an independent nonprofit school in downtown Portland serving fifth through eighth grade students with learning differences. Bridges students struggle with ADHD, ADD, autism, executive functioning difficulties, anxiety or other learning challenges that hamper their ability to succeed in traditional academic settings. Too often, they have been the victims of bullying or failure in previous schools, losing confidence and motivation.
At Bridges, students learn another way forward. Our goal is to give students with learning differences the academic foundation, social skills and confidence they need to successfully transition into traditional high school settings or other specialized academic endeavors.
In our small classes, nothing is left to chance. Students are not expected to ‘pick up’ material. Instead, they are taught how to learn using differentiated curriculums in reading, writing, science, social studies, and mathematics. They learn self advocacy and social skills. Most of all, they are safe, and supported, and able to grow.
Funds raised at Bridges’ annual auction support financial aid and specialized academic programs at the school. Tuition accounts for only 70% of the actual expense of a Bridges education. Donations and fundraising cover the remainder. Accessibility is one of Bridges’ core commitments so 30% of students receive financial aid. For many, it is the difference between a successful education and simply being passed along.
Our students work hard everyday to face their challenges. Join us in supporting them!
